Week 8: 500-word Midterm Journal Essay

The term journal refers to self-reflection. The use of I/me is acceptable.

The term essay assumes conventions of formal writing. Second person you, informal language choices are NOT acceptable.

Preparation: To prepare for planning/outlining and writing, review course feedback. Go to the Progress Tab, Class Progress to review the following and take some notes:

· In Progress Summary you will see your Current Grade, Maximum Final Grade, and Minimum Final Grade

· Go to the Discussions link and review/revisit feedback on your weekly discussions performance by opening the grading rubric and reviewing your posts/replies.

· Go to the Dropbox link and review/revisit dropbox feedback/rubrics/grades.

· Go to the Quizzes link and review/revisit quiz feedback.

· Look for trends across these performance measures, both in terms of successes and opportunities for improvement.

Planning/Outlining and Writing: Create a word document entitled Midterm Journal to discuss your status in DIRW 0327 at the end of Week 8, as well as your goals for the rest of the term. In the three required body paragraphs, discuss both trends and opportunities for improvement.

· Write a journal essay of a minimum of 500 words and following essay construction.

· Plan and write an introduction paragraph.

· Review WR pp. 3-43 for intro paragraph attention-getter strategies.

· End the intro paragraph with a 1-2 sentence thesis statement that answers the prompt thoughtfully and covers the discussions related in the body paragraphs.

· Plan for a 5-6 sentence, well developed paragraph.

· Plan and write a minimum of three supporting body paragraphs.

· Begin each body paragraph with a 1-2 sentence topic sentence that provides the main idea of the paragraph.

· Support the topic sentence with supporting points and explanation—use PIE construction for best results.

· End each body paragraph with a thoughtful conclusion statement that fits well with the topic sentence but does not repeat it.

· Plan for 6-8 sentences of discussion in each body paragraph.

· Plan and write a conclusion paragraph.

· Review WR pp. 3-43 for concl paragraph strategies.

· Plan for a 5-6 sentence, well developed paragraph.

Revise and edit your work before submitting it.

· You may assume that lack of editorial care lowers your grade as will failure to meet minimum word count.

Submission Guidelines: Upload your journal essay, demonstrating MLA typing format and centered title (Midterm Journal) by the due date and time.
